Springtime Adventures

I just graduated my my Mission docent class at La Purisima Mission. I'm really excited about this. I get to wear a costume and once my daughter, Tampa is ready, she'll get a costume of her own. We reenact life in 1822 at the Mission. I will be working with wool, carding, spinning, naturally dying, and weaving. It is fascinating what one can learn at the Mission, making soap, beeswax candles, carpentry, cooking using 1800's methods, baking bread in an horno oven, gardening, the list goes on. Tampa loves going to see all the animals there and walking. It's very meditative and a few people say that there are parts of the Mission that are haunted. There's something for everyone there and I think this is going to be a great learning experience for Tampa and me.

Here's a look at some of my homework. In April the sheep get sheared and I get a whole fleece to take home, skirt, wash, card, dye, and spin. It'll be somewhat of a family project.

Tampa and I celebrated Spring by planting seeds for our garden. My husband Mitch, helped out by going to his family's ranch and getting a whole bunch of dirt and manure. We planted sugar snap peas, green beans, zucchini and other squash, cucumbers, roma tomatoes, jalapenos, corn, sunflowers, potatoes, and fairy flowers.

We "discovered" this fairy ring while we were planting seeds.

Tampa's really excited about this. I told her she mustn't stand in the circle.

  1. How fun you get to be an reinactor! This is fantastic for Tampa, as well. She's adorable and I loved the fairy ring! Look forward to your following your adventures. We're in So Cal, so if we end up taking a drive up the coast, we'll have to stop by the mission! Thanks for sharing, Annemarie.

  3. Thank you both for your wonderful comments. Jen, you should check out our Mission. And of course check out what I do. Yesterday, I learned how to work on the floor loom. I'm looking forward to learning how to string the contraption.

  5. Reenacting is a lot of fun. Now after talking to some of the players at the Renaissance faire that we had just attended, I'd like to be a player in that, as well! :O) The costumes are so expensive, though.
